    No 4 Forend fitment

    Hi There,

New with enfields and I am sorry if my questions seems rudimentary, but I am learning.

After sifting through some information (threads and articles) I have some questions that I hope someone can shed light on.

    1) Is it correct that the draws are the area tha provide the upward pressure of the barrel to float it in the stock set, correct?

    2) I have a space at the back of the receiver socket where the forend meets this spot and it is as wide as .022". I believe it needs to be filled/shimmed. What would be a proper method to do this? Is it incorrect to use multiple layers of cardboard/fibre board to fill this location?

    3) I cannot grab the muzzle and move it in a 360dg arc to show play around the forened, did I misread that this is a check that can be done? I checked a 52 ROF(f) rifle that looks unused and the barrell can do this. Should I be looking at this as a criterion easy test for proper stock fitment?

    4) If I shim the rear forend area with the carboard as a test, I can fill the space but it appears it makes no change the the barrell clearance. Should I look to draws? The barrell seems to rest left at the muzzle in the stock...I can move it right and up and down but not left

    Lastly.........

    5) This is the first Enfield I have ever shot and at the range at 100yards offhand I could 16 out of 20 rounds into a 10" or so circle.....I will shoot it from the bench as part of the zeroing procedure next time I am out to see the dispersal etc. I however have access to 50yds and 100 yds. Shall I just take the 25yd zeroing numerics and increase them for 50 yds?

I just may be getting a tad to tedious with this....

Thanks fort taking the time to read this and if you choose to respond I thank you in advance !

This is soooo bad.... I should be working but I am playing with Rifles....

OK so it is the draws that provide the up pressure on the barrel...

I made up some impromptu shims out of some cardboard and masking tape to place on the draws...once I did that and i pushed the stock on the barrel drew up and away from the stock and closed the rear gap at the receiver socket.......unless I am seeing things this seems to be the case...

So if this is accurate seems I am taking on at some point reforming the draws etc..

NOW does ANYONE have an old no4 forend that I can purchase so I can have a dry run first before I work on this stock?
Thanks ! NickJC North western hills

Nick, in the nicest possible way, you really and truly need to read up on the threads dealing with fitting a fore-end and T-Bones thread on making up a No4T where he's doing exactly what you want to do.

You'll also find that there is no mention of cardboard shims, masking tape or shims of any sort................. Please read up first or all your practice will be in vain

Hi Mr. Laidlericon, may I call you Peter?

Agreed and since the original post I did read T-Bones thread and it makes perfect sense...AND I also read your article about handling the draws..........

After reading while playing around with some shims to just see what results would be with non worn draws or shrunken wood.....I can see the affect of proper fitment
of the receiver to the draws are and the effects of same.....everything just snugs right up....barrel 'floats' a tad by the muzzle etc.

Also I received a note about the bushing at the trigger guard screw....and the bushing might be too long....

When I tighten the screw down without the bushing on the forend locks tighter to the draws....

All very interesting in the mechanics of it all....

Please do not mistake my talk of shims tape and cardboard as anything other than trying to duplicate an effect with proper wood fitment....i was semi successful, but it is in no way a proper and permanent fix.
