Won't fire,safety problems
Hi, I have a Russian capture byf 42 that I've cleaned and re-assembled. For some reason I can't figure out, it won't go back to either of the 'safe' positions after I put it into the fire position. It won't fire at all, either. This is my first Mauser. I've dis and re assembled the bolt may times thinking maybe I screwed up, but no luck. Can anybody tell me what the problem might be? Thanks.

Are detail pictures possible? I'm afraid it's difficult to make any useful comments so far...

1. Assuming that all of the internal components of the bolt are assembled correctly, place the tip of the firing pin in that convenient hole in the buttstock, push down to compress the striker spring and rotate the safety to the straight up position.
2. Screw the complete firing pin assembly into the bolt body until you see that spring-loaded plunger click into position.
3. Put the bolt back into the rifle and test for correct function of the safety in all positions.
It sounds like the cocking piece is not assembled all the way down onto the end of the striker(firing pin). The end of the striker should be flush with the back of the cocking piece when assembled correctly. Not having the cocking piece on correctly would account for the rifle not firing (the sears are too far apart) and for the safety not working the way it should.

I just made a vid of the bolt re-assembly, and of course it now works fine! Thanks to all, especially Duckcreekdick for these words of wisdom ' Not having the cocking piece on correctly would account for the rifle not firing (the sears are too far apart) and for the safety not working the way it should.'
That seemed to be the issue. Now I can't wait to get to the range for a test!
Happy shooting everyone, and Thanks again!

My FN mauser will not go into safe position, however it will fire. The bolt will work in other large ring mausers (k98 and Vz's) but the only bolts that will go on safe position in the FN are the VZ's. I'm thinking the problem might be the sear. Any thoughts?
