    German Helmet Questions & Identification

    Good Evening All,

I found this while cleaning out my father-in-laws estate. I was informed that it may be a police helmet of sorts but I am not to sure on that. Anyways, I was wondering what something like this is worth as it is and also, how much would it cost me to obtain an original parts (liner, chinstrap, split-pins, grommets, etc)? I realize these parts pop up on eBay every great now and again but they usually tend to get up there in price. I've found a few websites offering reproduction parts and such but I'm not really sure I want to go that route. Anyways, all and any help/advice is appreciated as always! Thank you.

Here's a link to a site. They in turn have links on their pages to others. Through this door... Black Cross Military Collectibles, Militaria For Sale, German WWII, Reproduction Military collectibles, Military Antiques, Militaria Antiques

    Mu apologies for no door...

Seems to be a Germanicon WWII era police helmet. those are police insignia decals. There are reproduction and original liner parts ($$) available. I don't have a link.. try a 'google'.

It is a police helmet, its a M40, and the police decal is the "boarded decal" its a nice example, well worth looking for a liner etc, the number shown is a prodution number IIRC, the size will be two figures with a prefix letter or two found at the side ( on the inside of the rim) you need this to buy the correct size liner, some originals show up plus the rivets on ebay, as for price couldnt say, I dabbled with helmets about 7 years ago, but it would fetch a good price because of the police decals and the condition even with no liner I a collector would snap it up.

I very much appreciate the help. I believe I figured out what the top stamp "Q64" indicated. According to what I've found, the "Q" stands for Quist which was a company that manufactured helmets for Germanicon border guards and police. The 64, from what I've read, indicates the liner size. I have not however been able to figure out what the series of numbers underneath that indicates. I found a few liners on eBay and they usually end at well above $100 or so but to be honest I think that would be well worth it to give this helmet some life again. If I were to list this helmet on eBay I am sure it wouldn't last for more than a day due to its decals and such. They'd pull the auction in a heartbeat. Anyways, thank you all again for the help.

If you describe the helmet and the decals then no probs and say you are willing to send an email with close ups of the decals, if you cover half of the one with the Swastika or just cover the middle of the decal then you are ok regarding pics for the listing, the police decal you cant make out any party emblem so should be ok, good pics like the ones in you first post should do the job.

I would put a liner back in it just because I have a thing about my stuff having all the requisite parts. I would try IMA for the replica liner, pins and washers as I think the chances of finding an original set loose would be slim. Very nice helmet by the way.

Yes, restoration is definitely looking like the way to go. I am however a bit curious as to how much a helmet like this is worth in its current state. Thank you, I appreciate the help.
