Swiss Military Rifle

There's a general auction not to far from my place for the estate of a hunter. There's the usual remchesters and .22s for sale, but also listed was this "Swiss Military Rifle".



That description and this picture is all I have to go on, but what do you guys think it's worth?

The one on the left looks like a full military wood Swiss Vetterli (click here). I see that it has some kind of plaque on the butt, which I haven't seen on others before. It would be interesting to know what it is and what it says, as it could affect value.

They are 10.4mm (.41 Cal) rimfire and don't need to be registered in that state, although you can convert them to "centerfire" so you can reload and take them to the range.

I have two of them and they are fun to shoot.

You see them at gun shows and sometimes for sale on CGN's EE. I think they range from $250-350 depending upon condition etc.

Not sure about the one on the right....

Thanks for the info.

Converting it to centerfire and making my own brass is way out of my league right now, but it might be something I could look at down the road. I'll give a look over and see how it goes. I suspect the 'plaque' you see is masking tape, there was some odd stuff listed in the auction that make me suspect it was for the auctioneers benefit. This is just a general estate auction that happens to have a few guns, not a gun auction.

They are extremely well machined for their time. Even if you don't shoot it, it is a neat conversation piece. I have a couple, that I consider "keepers" even though I'm not set up to shoot them yet. Hope you get a deal on them.

The auction is today, but I'm not going. I figure that for the money I'm going to blow on a conversation piece I might as well set that cash aside for the Garand I want to buy later this summer.
