South Carolina marked Trapdoor
I have a Model 1884 Trapdoor sn.481xxx made in 1890 that has S.C. ( South Carolina) stamped on the butt plate tang. It's in very good to excellent condition with a bright shiny bore. Stock has only a few light scratches. Has what appears to be the original sling. Just curious as to it's rarity and value.

S.C. could also mean something like Stanhope Collage....

I'm most certain it's for South Carolina. The gentleman I bought it from gave me a little history on it. Seems his Grandfather was in the S.C. National Guard prior to WWI and this was his issued rifle. Some how the grandfather managed to buy, borrow or steal it and it stayed in the family until I bought it in 1991. The person I got it from (the grandson) was terminally ill and had nobody to leave it to so he was liquidating his collection, supposedly it had the bayonet and cartridge box with it but I never got those. The guy passed away before he could dig them out of his attic. Maybe one day i'll get off my lazy backside and research the s/n and see what I can find out. Who knows, the old guy's story might check out.
