Try some super colibris thru a fairly short barrel. They are a hoot with a scope. I've been using them on starlings out of a 10/22 carbine and Marlin 39 Mountie. My best shot so far is about 50 yards using some good old KY windage and the Ruger (aiming about 2 foot high). The projectiles travel slow enough to see thru a 4 power scope.

I also like CCI CB Longs.
FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda.

Sorry guys, but if you click on the above link I left, it will bring you to an empty screen. After being up since 2001, the Ratkill Message Board was recently pulled down. The site is being revised.
Maybe it will come back in the future.

Got Number 30 Early This Morning
Around 12:30 this morning I got up and looked out my second floor window. It overlooks the area where we feed stay cats and sure enough this rat was eating out of the bowl.
I went down stairs and wedged the barrel of bolt action rifle between the door jam and the door. In approximately 12-15 minutes he appeared on the right corner of the board in view at bottom of image.
A millisecond later he was dead. You can see the CCI .22 Short entrance wound just below the ear.

Interesting
When I was a 11 years old, I was fortunate and Santa gave me a (used of course) Sheridan Blue Streak 5mm pump up pellet rifle. We were living in a rental house in a rural area and I got to know the neighboring farmer. He had a building where he stored seed corn. It was rat/mice infested. He offered me a penny for a mouse and a nickle for every 2 rats. I earned enough money that fall to purchase a brand new Zebco model 22 fishing reel. I shot hundreds of those critters. I could hit a penny at 25 feet every time. Unfortunately, we moved to town and I lost my job, so to speak.

Some laws just need to be broken.

Hey DD.
That shi* HAS to happen a lot around South Oakland too.
A bolt action Remington with a CB cap makes rats "dance" and I sure YOU KNOW where most of ours come from....

There are more 38's, 40's and 9's fired in So. Oakland County than .22's
