Vickers Transit Chest Picture Study
Earlier in the year I was lucky enough to have a close examination of a Vickers chest and also to take some photographs. This was at an event and I am very grateful to the owner for allowing me to do so. Hopefully he won't mind me sharing the pictures with fellow enthusiasts because the subject of Vickers Transit chests was recently raised, briefly, on this Forum. I thought that these images would be of interest and help to other members.

Brings back some memories, although I had the Vickers on the tripod in the front room....... the bit I did keep was the chest for the tripod, which was given away and has not long returned.

Takes me back too. We were firing a couple of them a few times a year until a few years ago. Nothing like warming up a vickers and allowing it to steam on a cold winters morning over Netheravon Down on Salisbury Plain

I used to 'Steam a lot' on Salisbury Plain Pete. But that wad due to Early Morning PT Runs!........

Still a treacherous DZ full of pot holes..........but a brilliant training area going back hundreds of years. Cromwells Model Army trained there!!

Jeeze! When I think about how many Bren & Vickers chests we burned!.....Hundereds of them! No body wanted any at that time, & they did indeed.
Take up a LOT of space when piled five high in rows!............

When I purchased my first Bren, deactivated, from Ryton in around the year 2000 I paid about £200 for it. The price included a good condition transit chest and an Australian
canvas cover. I could have also purchased empty Bren transit chests from them at the same time which, if memory serves me correctly, were priced at about £20 each including shipping. I wish now that I had also procured 2 dozen transit chests from them as well as the Bren.

Hindsight is a wonderful commodity, in terms of stuff you had your hands on! It was just storing it.

As a few have said, way back then no one wanted them, I know of someone who delivered the same fate as chopping them up and burning them, pity though as one of the chests was an L42 chest...... it did raise an eyebrow when I told him they go from around £800 +
