Number 4 stamped on Lithgow SMLE receiver ring...
I recall discussion about this type of mark before, but cannot recall if there was agreement over it or anything official uncovered.... or even if it was discussed here. I think one thought was an abbreviation of the Military District number format....
This pic and description popped up on another site and I posted I would see if I could find out. Here is the posters question....
Would any of the Lithgow guru's out there be able to tell me the meaning or purpose behind this number '4' stamped on the front of the action of this 1941 Lithgow No.1 MK3?
The rifle I am looking at is completely matching and untouched, barrel and all parts original and never FTR'd. Have had a look at markings listed on Lithgow small arms factory website and the serial number is a correct 'C' prefix, but I can't find anything about this number.
Any help would be much appreciated!
And here is his one and only pic so far.... Thank you.

Yes, I'm going to suggest it is 4 for 4th military district in South Australia.
