I have dimples in my butt....plate

I took this rifle out to sight in for this years matches. Springfield 1027701 with GG EHD inspected stock. After getting it zeroed at 200 I noticed it has dimples in the butt plate. It also has punch marks at the triggerguard screws to stake them. The barrel is SA 7-18 and will hold 5 rounds inside 8 inches. CMP sells good stuff.

The buttplate was undoubtedly stippled by USM armorers at some point. Does the rifle have a "Hatcher hole?"

The stake marks were put in by the Greeks when they got the rifle as part of a Military Assistance Program. Look at the floorplate and see if it has a mark that looks something like a letter "B." If so the Greeks pinned the floorplate shut.

Years ago I had abutt plate for an 03 that was stipled like that.

Congratulations! You have a USMC-issue service rifle. The stippled buttplate is one of many modifications the USMC did to their rifles. The punch marks on the trigger guard screws are also an occasional USMC modification.

The stock has been scraped and the metal finish seems original to me. I looked through my Brophy and the hand guard might be the correct vintage going by the windage knob cut. No hole on left side of receiver.

The handguard was manufactured during WWII by the Booher Woodworking Co. under a contract from the U.S. Army Ordnance Dept. The handguard is not likely original to the rifle.
