What FAL scope mount is this?

Has a channel in the top with a single screw mount for the optic, looks similar to an M16icon carry handle type mount.

Can you post a picture of the channel? The Australianicon Army experimented with a cover to fit the LC-7-40 Ring Sight, which fits a M16icon carry handle, but your cover is much more robust than the ones I have seen for that previously.

Thanks, it did come from Australiaicon.

It looks well made - no markings other than that number though, which is 460 C 140 - 5.

Finish has a slight matt wrinkle finish to it.

DSA Inc., (USAicon) makes a series of scope mounts, but with Picatinny rail, for the FAL series of rifles with a similar type of locking system. They (DSA) claim it is based on the "South African" design. Could the OP's mount be South African?

That's exactly what I was thinking. I have a genuine South African made weaver style mount. Very similar construction, thick aluminum walls, and screws tied to internal steel inserts. Cryptic numbers on the side.

I'm thinking perhaps a NV device?

I think you'll find this will take a standard AR scope from the past. The very same one that will fit a carry handle...

Interesting thing to me is, what scope would have had a carry handle mount in the late 70s/ early 80s, but not been calibrated for 5.56? And why would it be worth the trouble of making up a pretty complex cover where the optic can't be removed without removing the cover from the rifle?

No idea on value, but I'd be interested in buying. I like strange optic mounts....
