I don't think it's nickle, I had one and know exactly which one you have. I tried the same thing. Just use a bit of chrome polish and it will look amazing.

Soldiers were allowed, at their own expense, to have their bayonets nickle-plated. This reduced the attention they had to give their bayonet to prevent rusting. Rusting was a problem, because they drilled in the snow so much. They must have been hawks about maintenance. You never see Swiss rifles or bayonets with any pitting, yet the rifle's buttstocks are usually all chewed up from knocking the snow off hob-nailed boots.
