My 2 1903 rebuilds.
I found these 1903 sporters to rebuild. The short bbl one is from 1930, has no scope holes, bubba cut it to 21 inches. I shortened the stock and forearm and moved the bbl band back an inch. The full stock hides all but one of bubba’s bbl holes. Shoots and handles great. The standard bbl is a 1919 with the Pederson device hole and a 2-33bbl but it does have holes for a side scope mount. Bubba only cut the stock up on this one. I replaced the cut off with a Pederson cut off and trigger. Refinished the replacement wood and cut grasping grooves.

Those came out excellent. The stock grooves and finish especially look good. Did you plug the scope mount holes? I like the domed head type of screw plug, although they're a little hard to find. Most I see now are a flat headed.

Haven’t done anything with the screw holes yet. I did reblue the top buttplate screw after I posted this pix the first time. Hadn’t noticed it before then. I really like the short bbl rifle look and am toying with the thought of doing a 20-21 inch bbl ‘Mk3 Enfield build out of a messed up sporter that I recently bought. Still collecting parts. Mainly trying to get it to shoot lead boolits right now.

The No 1 Mk III* makes an excellent short rifle. Shorten barrel; shorten the bayonet monstrosity about 25mm and reposition; remove top wood and plug clip slots; slim down fore stock so its flush with the metal at the front; it will look like a Manlicher style full stock. Cut off mag flush with the trigger guard and nobody will know it's a LE.
Fit butt pad if you don't have an L butt so it's not too short. Handles like it was made for you, shoots excellently, at least mine did.

Nice rifles those. I did make a shortened pattern #1 Mk3 SMLE some twenty five years ago for a friend that needed one. It's not so hard to do. Turned out fine. Nice rifles...

In order to be competitive with the 10 shot Enfield guys at our BAM matches I added the extended magazine that sarco had on sale some time back. I’ve since removed the chain and keeper as it’s super hard to install or remove so it’s staying on that trigger guard. The keepers there to hold 10 rds in it when not on a rifle. Actually it’s 11+1 when installed.
