For the period in question I expect you'd be looking for a unit that was involved in the Boer War. I've had a quick look and I believe Mounted Rifles would be closest to the mark, especially if you picked up your bayonet in Canada. The markings would have been for regiment weaponry records and used like a rack number. I suspect at home they would have been known just as Mounted Rifles and only when they went abroad would they adopt the Canadian part. I've heard that those sort of administrative details were done a little more haphazard back then. Cheers.
