Argintine FN49 with canted gas cylinder/front sight...
Hello,
The front sight cants a pretty noticeable amount to the right (looking from the receiver end), and wondering who else may have experienced this, and perhaps a fix? I wonder how much, if any adjustment there is to rotate the gas block/front sight a few degrees left to correct this, or if the barrel can be screwed in a bit more to correct the issue, then adjust headspace?
I looked under the handguard and it seems there is some space between the to stops where some rotation could happen (remove a cross pin?) done somehow, assuming there is the ability of the barrel bleed hole and gas block/tube holes to align enough to function.
Really like the rifle, and want to be able to have it "right"... Not sure how/when this could have happened, as I can't imagine the folks in Argentina would have allowed such an obvious defect to pass during 7.62x51 re-barreling, and can't imagine even the roughest shipping could cause what I am seeing? Any well qualified smiths who specilize in these FN49's, who I might contact to bounce around some ideas? Thanks for the help.

If you need the sight to come left you have to have the barrel removed and machined just a touch. Re indexed. The gas will be correct but not if you move the front sight. It's the barrel that has to be moved. It's not bad if you have the tools and have done that sort of thing before.

Thanks.
Yes, I looked at the receiver/barrel junction, and it is definitely off index, and the op rod binds in many positions. I understand what you are saying about milling just a touch off the shank and screwing in until the sight is vertical using proper torque. Takes skill, patience, and concern for a quality job, unlike some S&W revolvers I have seen where they over-torque a barrel too long at the shank to force it vertical, and crush the barrel threads... My big question even if my FN 49s barrel was correctly fitted, what about post headspacing?
Assuming it needs to be re-headspaced, I believe I read that this weapon uses certain sized inserts/"shoulders" to adjust headspace/boltface distance in battery, rather than a reamer. Since I wrote this post, I received an estimate of $250 for the repair plus shipping. I have an 03 FFL, so shipping is no big deal aside from the additional $50-$70 cost. So my quandary is drop $325 in it, and hope nothing else is wrong once it gets a look over. I know the rifle is considered a desirable one when sound, all numbers match, but still $325 put into this rifle almost seems like a deal breaker.
To help clarify the issues, The shot of the receiver shows the barrel off index that a little deeper screwing in would correct, along with a red dot showing where the op rod is rubbing high on the half circle cut-out.
Other picture shows just how far outa whack the op rod is in the tube, and again, would seem to be fixed by the barrel being turned just a bit. Tube also looks like it's not parallel to the barrel either . I can't imagine this rifle passed military acceptance in this condition, but who knows?

Your right about headspacing the FN49's. It's done at the rear of the bolt not the front, by replacing "Locking Shoulders" in the receiver. Give Guy Snelen a call or email, he's at All American Gunsmithing in MO. 417-754-1097 or guyamg@centurytel.net.

The question about dollars spent on repairs will have to be your concience. I'd do the work myself so it's no issue. You and Gunny are correct about the locking shoulders. Quite an ingenious system really. Very effective. And, you still have to buy or find a selection to get that right. Or, just acheive TDC and shoot it. It'll probably be OK.

Thanks everyone. A few days back, I emailed Guy Snelen who I found by virtue of a Google search, and he replied to call him which I will do soon. Seems this fella has some connection with FN service, and may be what I need. Anyone ever have him do work on your FN rifle, and can report how satisfied you were with the total experience?
Thanks.

Hi Breaker,
I sent a LUX 30-06 to Guy a few months ago to verify headspace and repair a trigger guard problem. Havn't fired it yet but the cost was very reasonble and service was quick. He's quite a character and very knowledgeable, be prepared to spend some time on the phone with him.

I have a buddy who has a FN-49 in 7.62mm. It will not run right. Fires, jams, clear jam, fire and jam. Not sure if they were carried and never fired. Likely seldom fired.

I think you'll find they were never made in 7.62. Probably a converted 7.92.

After an interesting conversation with Guy, the gun is well packed, and going off to him today. Curious Gunny, how did you pay him after repair? Thanks.
