    1972 colt SP1

    I was at the gun shop today They had a colt AR dated to 1972 for 1100 tax included the only thing not original was the bolt and follower. I collect military surplus firearms and I am not into commercial ARs. But except for the full auto feature it reminded me very much of the m16 I qualified with in the air Force in 1971. Are the early colts collectable and would close to 1100 with tax be to much to pay for it

    $1100, tax included ($1020 +tax) is a fair market price for an SP1. They seem to sell from $900 to $1200. What is not correct about the bolt and carrier?

    The counter guy behind the counter told me that the bolt and the follower was wrong for a 72 colt. I took his word for it as I know nothing about ARs

    Lots of guys change mag followers for the anti tilt. What bolt did it have? Not like it matters, it should have a semi auto bolt...for the SP1...

    The bolt carrier is the black colored part and the bolt the silver colored part. Depending, this would be the bolt carrier group for your 1972 SP1.

    The very early Colt SP1 carriers were machined in a different way which was changed by the early 1970 era carriers - all being semi auto

    I was hoping he could get a pic of the one he was discussing...or we'll be guessing all day. Yes, should be semi and chrome, no serrations. Even way back, guys liked to upgrade so it's hard to say what's there. He doesn't even describe what he saw.

    You are right Jim, a lot of Colt SP1 Sporters had parts changed out starting with the Edgewater buffers from the mid 60's to the no trap buttstocks and bolt/carriers, a lot of upgrades. That is why it is nice to find a SP1 from the 1960's that is still original
