hi guys i need some help this is my rifle 1903 was a gift from my father in law(well was attached with a wife)I don't know it's a nra,it's a sporter but need some help to find more info thank you guys

The serial # dates to 1918.

The barrel is from a Smith Corona 1903A3.

Who made the rear sight?

Looks to be a good shooter, not an NRA, but nice.

HI mr MIKE D' both sights are made by lyman and yes is a great shooter with great accuracy;200 yrds+

Hello. It IS NOT an NRA sporter. It is a parts gun built for target shooting. The Lyman rear sight is actually a hunting style sight with adjustment knobs that require a coin or screwdriver to adjust. The aperature is a Merit type with the large eye cup removed. It should be a great "fun gun".

What markings are on the root of the bolt handle (where it joins the bolt body) and the safety lug? The bolt handle appears to be the "straight" variety (vs. the later "curved" type) Most straight handled bolts are "Single Heat Treated (SHT)" vs. the later "Double Heat Treated (DHT)" or "Nickel Steel (NS)". A SHT bolt may crack and shed its locking lugs. The Army didn't consider this a sufficient reason to withdraw SHT bolts from service; At Camp Perry, shooters were advised to bring a spare bolt already headspaced to their rifle. That way, if the bolt lugs failed (safety lug must have always held), the shooter could change bolts & keep going. Many people continue to use SHT bolts but you may want to consider a new DHT or NS bolt if yours is indeed SHT.
