No 32 Scope Mount - Two Mounts for One Rifle C36311
I recently acquired a No.32 scope that comes with an original mount.
The scope is a HBM Co Mk2 with a serial number 10859
The "JG" mount has been milled and engraved with the rifle serial number C36311.

Attachment 34084
A quick search of this site shows that another mount is marked with the rifle serial number C36311, as posted by madcratebuilder.
No32 MkI Scope questions.
Attachment 34085
Two different mounts and scopes for the same rifle C36311 . Both scopes and mounts still in circulation.
Is this common? Perhaps the original scope and mount was lost and replaced?
Is rifle C36311 still in circulation?
Paul

couldn't that be a contract/or number?

How sad if the rifle isn't about! Nice to see both. (ETA: Thanks for the link!) Hard to explain the doubling up of the brackets in regular service, without the first one having dramas in the bracket. But perhaps it was done after disposal to another service. The milled area reminds me of some Canadian brackets, but the placement is odd. Too far back. British reassignments seem to just get the old number lined out, and the new one added nearby.

what about a part number or stock number? for the blanket folders use.

It's in the normal serial number format for a BSA, no? And a previously unknown inventory control number system seems a bit unlikely.

yeah JM i know what you are saying but the c prefix has come up on other parts that are related to the lee enfield. I think it is unlikely that it is a part number but the way its been stamped on the bracket is a newey to me but I am but a grasshopper in these matters. and to have 2 with the same number and style without any older number being crossed out is strange.
Kevlar on!!
Cheers

Just a bit of supposition but could it be that this is a case of where a Mk2 scoped rifle is u/s and due to be returned to Ordnance so Armourers shop keep Mk2 and fit same to a Mk1 scoped rifle. Therefore unit keep books straight, unit keeps Mk2 scope and u/s rifle and crap scope get returned to Ord.
In the normal run of play when doing this, you'd just change the scopes over as the bracket is matched to the rifle but scopes are interchangeable - of sorts........ with a bit of luck and a following wind and all that.......
Just a thought and my 2p's worth

........Thx DPL. Isn't the 'milled window' containing the serial number very much a well-into-the-post-war-era armourers' phenomenon? (though I know this may not apply to Canadian practice).
When Charnwood got the big batch of L42's there was many a bracket marked up in this way - indeed the bracket on my favourite L42 is so marked, with the serial within an oval milled panel.

Re the milled out window. This would only have done at a workshop where there were those facilities. This wouldn't have been available at many field workshops but would have been available at the Command and Base workshops. But DRP is right. This milling out and renumbering is getting into the L42 era

I've never seen a No.32 bracket on a No.4T with the milled out renumbering. Come to think of it, I've never seen it on a No.32 bracket fitted to an L42 either!!
