lead bullets in krags
My project sporter has a beautiful bore and it slugged in spec. I would like to try some lead bullet loads in it. Anyone know what moulds, or bullet weights, were popular for these?
I am a member of the cast bullet assoc, so I'll post there, also.
Thanks all,
Ralph Ed

Krags generally do very well with cast bullets.
I personally use the Lee C312-185 bullet over 19 gr of SR-4759. My Krag has an over-sized bore so I size .312. Accuracy is consistently 2 MOA.
See also Krag loads on the cast boolit discussion forum.

Don't shoot worth a hoot
I don't think lead bullets shoot worth a hoot! I've attached a pic of a 12 or 13 shot group I shot with my Krag. Load was 20gr of Blue Dot under the 168gr Eagan MX3-30AR. Rem 9 1/2M primer. Velocity about 2000fps. With all the work expended to roll these things I expected one hole, but just look at how they spread out! Maybe if I sneak up on the target I can make it look like a benchrest group, oh, this target was shot from about 80yds. Obviously I'm kidding when I say lead don't shoot worth a hoot. I know some men's ultra modern benchrest rifles won't do as well! The Eagan is a bit light, it just barely touches the throat when seated so that the mouth of the case is at the back of the big lube groove. The RCBS silhouette bullets work well, I'd prefer the 180gr, and if you go to castboolits.com, you'll find a group buy for a modern rendition of the Lyman's 311284, 210gr bullet, done by NOE, Night Owl Enterprises. It's a bit larger, especially on the nose, than Lyman's version. Nose is .302 whereas the molds Lyman is making now a days are producing .299 nose bullets. The highest shot of that group was called, the lowest visible hit was a different group. Another group is pictured on my avatar, 5 shots with the Belding and Mull 311169, 12.5gr of Blue Dot, 100yds, 1575fps.

Yeah Andi, that's awful shooting - you should sell that Krag.

I shoot the tried-and-true 16 grains of 2400 pushing a Lee 200 grain, tumble lubed, gas check bullet. More accurate in my Krag than I can hold it!

Hey fellas, I'm fairly new here. Just bought a Krag today and am looking over things to learn more about them. I have an 03a3 and shoot cast in it exclusively. I started with a 311299 and it was too undersized. Since it's a bore rider it has to bite a little but it swam in the bore. I didn't even shoot it in the rifle. So I got a 314299 and size it to 312 and it is 302 on the nose. It works extremely well in it so I have no doubt that it will work in the Krag. I just got a 311332 to try but have not had a chance to. I will post pictures of all my girls soon.
