Lyman sight question.
I have recently purchased a nicely sporterized Springfield 1903. It is wearing a Redfield hooded front ramp sight. The reciever is tapped for a scope and is also tapped for a Lyman type rear sight. The stock has a notch took out of it for the sight. I am wondering how high the blade of the front sight has to be to be able to use the Lyman 57 peep sight. The Redfield looks a little low. I don't beieve the barrel has been altered, it just has a aftermarket sight where the GI one should be.
I am wanting to shoot this rifle very bad, but no rear sight is holding me back.
Thank you for any help. Aye Kay.
PS It's in the right serial number range not to worry about the reciever.

You might try this person. I got this link from someone else who posted recently here. I also have purchased several parts from Thomas J. Mulligan, MULLIGUN@AOL.COM PHONE 516-431-6628. I got two Marine Corps front blades for my Lyman rear sights on my 1903s, it makes for an outstanding sight picture. He might have a rear sight or that fits or something to go with a Lyman 57.

Thank you for the contact info. Before I call, can I ask what might be a stupid question? Do the Lyman sights always mount on the right side of the rifle, the one with the bolt handle? Looking at pictures on the internet, some look to mount on the opposite side, but I figure maybe the negatives could have been flip flopped?

Some Lyman receiver sights mount on the left side - M-70 Winchester, 722& 721 Remington, etc. Generally the right side mounted sight are for rifles that have something blocking the left side mounting position as in the Cutoff of the M1903 series, the Bolt release on the Mauser 98, the M1917(remodeled) and the Remington 30S and the 720. Hope this helps

Cosine26, Thank you for the info. I'll be putting in an order for the sight this week.
