difference in boxes, sniper/vickers
Just a question for you learned gentlemen, what is the difference between the 303 sniper transit case and a vickers/lewis transit case apart from the obvious inserts which would be different of course. Have my eye on one at the moment and hoping to get for the right price.

Have you ever heard the Pommie phrase '.................chalk and cheese..........' That's what you're looking at!

The Vickers boxes I've got have parts and pieces to fit the Lewis. I think that is what Peter was saying. They're the same box. ('cept one of mine has a Maxim in it).

I think you've (or I have....) misread it Limpet........ The Vickers/Lewis is totally different to the No4T chest. I think that the only similarity is in the khaki colour

Vickers/Lewis box is much larger (and heavier) than the No4 sniper box. Some BREN boxes were converted to No4 boxes but they were also bigger!

Interesting. In one of my Vickers boxes, it has a wooden support tied in with a string that say "FOR LEWIS GUN" or some such. It is buried in the garage, but I'll see if I can find a picture of it.

The boxes for the Lithgow snipers are the same size as the Bren box, but they were for storage, two rifles to a box.

So if i was to pick up a vickers/lewis box for a good price would it be able to be converted for a no111 sniper box with the correct inserts or am i barking up the wrong tree, or just barking mad.

Just barking Fergs........., just barking! You COULD knock it right down to slats and start again but make sure that you remove all the old nails, screws, pins and staples before the chippie sets about it planing it down for width! On a serious note, I expect that some of the hasps and buckles might be the same. On the other hand, if it's a No4T chest, you could just get a damned good repop from someone on this very site
