I have seen them................
And own two of them on Brit LL Garands. My other Brit LL Garand has a flush nut sight.

I wonder just how many rifles made it to combat areas. It seems, from what I read, that the Type 1 short pinion locking bar was only on those rifles manufactured from some time in early 1942 until late 42 or early 43. I wonder how they went about changing out sights on those rifles in the hands of combat troops.

Here are some pics
I have three rifles with type I lock bar sights. have been trying for half an hour to post pics from my photobucket album with no luck. I guess the new board is a little too complicated for me.

A good friend of mine has one on his 1942 M1. It is a PITA as it comes loose all the time. No wonder they were replaced

Winchester
Winchester went from the "flush nut" (photos) to the Type 2 lock bar. By removing just the flush nut, the Type 1 lock bar could be installed. The Type 2 required a different pinion

Find it interesting that Lend Lease M1 rifles seem to have been untouched by the Brits and made it back stateside pretty much as the left as built at the arsenal factory back in the 1941-42 period. Anybody ever receive an M1 Garand from the CMP equipped with type #1 lockbar set?
