~ The Mysterious and Elusive type #1 Lockbar Sight

re: ~ The Mysterious and Elusive type #1 Lockbar Sight.

This is just a passing thought and somewhat of a curiosity question, Does anyone here either own or has encountered an M1icon rifle equipped with a type #1 lockbar sight? Has anybody ever seen a type #1 lockbar sight?

I'm just guessing that most type #1 lockbar sights were replaced at the armorer's first opportunity. It would be logical to suppose that most of those sights were probably scrapped!

I have an early 1941 vintage M1 Garand rifle that by it's serial number was out-shopped from Springfield with a Flushnut sight set. Sometime later that Garand was equipped with a type #2 lockbar sight which it has now. Would guess that the 1941 rifle skipped right past type #1 lockbar retrofit sight phase.

Any type #1 sight collectors or aficionados around here? Thanks!

I wonder just how many rifles made it to combat areas. It seems, from what I read, that the Type 1 short pinion locking bar was only on those rifles manufactured from some time in early 1942 until late 42 or early 43. I wonder how they went about changing out sights on those rifles in the hands of combat troops.

I have three rifles with type I lock bar sights. have been trying for half an hour to post pics from my photobucket album with no luck. I guess the new board is a little too complicated for me.

A good friend of mine has one on his 1942 M1icon. It is a PITA as it comes loose all the time. No wonder they were replaced

    Winchester

Winchester went from the "flush nut" (photos) to the Type 2 lock bar. By removing just the flush nut, the Type 1 lock bar could be installed. The Type 2 required a different pinion

Find it interesting that Lend Lease M1icon rifles seem to have been untouched by the Brits and made it back stateside pretty much as the left as built at the arsenal factory back in the 1941-42 period. Anybody ever receive an M1 Garand from the CMPicon equipped with type #1 lockbar set?
