Got my first one at the same time. Still have it, although it was not mine for about 8 months recently. They've never been "just another gun" to me!
There was a small lot of spare barrels for sale at about the same time, but they had dissappeared by the time we called about getting some "just in case". Can't remember if Navy Arms or Numrich had those.

What a difference 19 years makes.

Now with the 1994 $595 price of a L42A1, today after allowing for average annual inflation of say 5%, that should equate to $1503.53

I would be more than happy to pick up an L42A1 for $1503.53

At the time it "was just another gun" because i was in love with FAL. I was building, shooting, chasing parts, tools, accessories and learning how to do it all. The L42A1 was complete in it's own case, needing nothing except preservation, which I have done after it passed my trials. My Longbranch no4T was more fun. I love the chase. killing is too short. Of course, that was dealer price. And without the transit chest, scope can or any assurance the scope was matching. The shop from whence my friend and I obtained the select grade kits had them priced at ~US$1200. They got three in one order, but were not able to get more.

And the non-standard chest with which it came (possibly built to fit the "L" stock that was on it but has been in storage for many years):

Never did complete the kit with "#1" (which is marked with a "2" in several places), but between Brian Dickicon and other local friends the other two currently in house are well equipped. "#2" rifle is one of the other rifles that came into that store at the same time. It's the first one that needed the front pad resoldered and new screws installed.

Had an opportunity to buy one of the Savage L42a1s about ten years ago. Stupidly let that one get away. But even then it went for about, IIRC, US$4000!
