Enfield No 1 MK 2 in .410
I've been collecting milsurps my whole life, and my Dad before that, but this is my first post here, so first I just wanted to say hi to everyone.
I was in a LGS and saw an Enfield No 1 MK 2 in .410 caliber
I read an old thread here about the rifles and about ammo for them. I was going to reply to that old thread to keep the same thoughts going, but the system advised me to create a new thread instead.
In the old posts (from 2015), people were saying that Cheaper Than Dirt had ammo for this rifle. I'm not seeing it on CTD's site, so either they no longer have it or I am searching incorrectly. Do any of you folks know of a current source of fireable ammo for the .410 Enfields? I am thinking of buying it, but I want to see about ammo first.
Also, do you folks have any idea of value on these rifles? This one seemed to be in very good condition, with a very shiny bore and all numbers matching. It was stamped
410
RFI
1949
It looked to me like the magazine plate had been replaced with wood. From reading about these, I believe that's because they were converted to single shot so the Indian militia & police wouldn't have too much firepower. Is that correct?
Thanks for any assistance you can provide,
Brian

Shotgun ammo...
Its here...

Converting L-E's to .410 single shot was common here in UK back in the day when barrels were shot out and it was cheaper to buy another cheap L-E than rebarrel.

A No1 Mk2 - I'd like to see some pictures of that - any chance you can post some ?
Here's hoping.
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

Ishapore .410
I suggest you read on the internet about the Ishapore Enfield .410 conversions and the cartridges useable in them. If your chamber is not reamed out to accept standard .410 ammo, you are limited to the .303 straight wall cartridges. Check it out.

It also meant that they could be held on a shotgun license and not a firearm ticket

The Indian Police and prison guard types used to call those .410 shotgun converted rifles 'magicians wands' The difference between the two was that one was for cunning stunts while the other was for stu..........., er......... controlling people!

"...the cartridges usable in them..." No 3" .410 ammo at all. 2" only, as I recall. I believe the brass and/or ammo can be had from Midway.
"...Indian Police and prison guard types..." They were used in Kenya as well. Brits supposedly didn't trust the assorted troopies who got 'em after the Mau Mau's caused so much fuss.
Spelling and Grammar count!
