I've had a ruger mk1 for years. No problem taking it apart but what is the trick for putting it back together? I spend a lot of time trying to get the retaining pin(?) back in the grip.
Thanks.

See pages 9 and 10. The key is following the instructions about hammer position and hammer strut. The hammer strut is the do-hicky that hangs down from the hammer. At a certain point you move the safety from safe to fire and pull the trigger while in the middle of installing the mainspring housing. Then it's important to get the hammer strut to line up with the mainspring plunger.
Once you get the hang of it the assembly is quick and painless. Just look at the figures in the manual and your pistol and you will be able to figure it out.
If for some reason you are unable to get the Ruger mark 1 manual to open, I can scan and send you a copy via email. Post here if you need that and I could do it tomorrow.
Hi Dave, I would greatly appriciate it. I tried the ruger web site but was unable to download the mk1 manual. I did not have any problems with other info on thier site. Your quick instructions/hints helped.

John, I just sent you an email with the entire Ruger Mark 1 manual file attached as a PDF file. If it can not get through your email (some have limitations on file size of attachments) let me know here and I'll see if I can just scan the two pages that pertain and send them.
Once upon a first time when I took it apart to clean, even with the manual, I had an awful time getting the hang of it. I was so frustrated and POed with the thing that even when I got it back together and working, I took it apart just for spite and struggled with it again.& again..each time over and over and the reassembly times got shorter & shorter as the little game with the strut and the plunger got totally and indelibly engraved on my head. I found a way that somehow helped; I turned the pistol on its side and used a straightened out paper clip and a strong light behind me. A flashlight also worked. For me it was a little juggling act to use the paper clip to guide and hold the strut in the righy spot, rotate/tilt the pistol and push things all together at the right time and position. If I got it than anyone can. I'm sure that you will succeed. JC
1. make sure the hammer is released (i.e. pull the trigger) so that the hammer strut (the dingle dangle thing) is down inside the grip channel and LOOSE. you can see it easily.
2. push UP VERY (VERY) HARD on the mainspring bolt-stop housing PIN to make DANG SURE it is FULLY up into the receiver tube hole.
3. hold the pistol like you are shooting at a squirrel high up in pine tree. SEE THE DINGLE DANGLE (hammer strut).
4. CLOSE the mainspring housing latch.
It will NEVER close unless you have BOTH the mainspring housing pin fully seated and the hammer strut dangling down at the right angle.
here is a good video (if you need it).

I love the smell of firearms dis-assembly videos in the morning! I remember the first time I took my MKII apart. Though I'd strangle myself or Bill Ruger for how hard it was. I did the same thing as Jerome and did it again just to get it down. The internet has made life very simple in many ways.
