New Addition: 1957 Mk3 Bren Gun

Meet the latest addition to my Bren collection: a Mk3 made at RSAF Enfield in 1957 - serial number UE57A4741 and all matching. I shall shortly start sprucing it up, beginning with the woodwork.

So what can you tell me about it? Is it one of the ex-Irish Defence Force ones? It was bought from Saracen Exports, who appear to have secured a large quantity.

,,,,,just out of curiosity, what is the current going rate/cost for one of these DEWAT ('DEACT', I guess, technically, Eh?) guns in the UK??

I got my one from here:

Which is unusually cheap. Mk3's used to be quite rare in the UK and would fetch much higher sums. Looks like they're selling steadily as they initially advertised a stock of 200 a few months ago.

Forgot to say... ordinary MkI's and MkII's seem to go for around £400-500 at present. Early MkI's can go for rather more depending on how 'factory spec' they are. Have a browse of Milweb.net and Gunstar.co.uk to see what's about on the UK market.

My Mk.1 only comes out of the box once a year for an HBSA exhibition at Bisley and so I am thinking of flogging it. It comes complete with box and CES (but only the one barrel), plus a scruffy BSA Mk.1 tripod. The gun itself is immaculate. It looks like it was FTR's, deacted and then I bought it. Does anyone know what I should ask for it.

I'd have thought around £1K for the full set. Maybe more depending on what the gun is?

One way UK laws are better than the US is that you are at least allowed to collect deactivated MGs, here in the US except for a few classes of destructive devices, any former full auto is a No-No, unless it is cut into pieces or registered before 1968.

The deactivation spec in the UK for LMG's like the Bren is relatively 'sympathetic' as they can still be dry fired and partially field-stripped. (The barrel has to be welded in to prevent removal) Sadly this isn't the case for 'assault weapons' such as SMG's and assault rifles which (since 1995) have to be welded solid.
