What is the accuracy standard or passing test results for the military
1. 5.56 ammunition
2. M16 service rifle
What does the military accept as good to go as far as accuracy ?

I saw that information in an ammo section sticky at AR15.com awhile back. Try serach there.

You need to be able to hit a man sized target at 500 yards with M855 ammunition. That is all I know.

I quess what I want to know is........Army: "ok you gun makers we want a new rifle and it has to be X accurate" I am trying to find out what that was for the m16

As with most things dealing, with the military, the answer's not as straight forward as you might hope. However, you can review the full military specifications (including accuracy with M885 ammunition, which of course has it's own military specifications) for the M16A2 and M4A1 rifles at the first link below. The second link will allow you to view the milspecs of many more M16 variants, as well as those for older weapons (M1 Garand, BAR, etc.) Hope this helps!
