Ballard carbine
Found this at an antique store today..a Ballard carbine. I've maybe seen one other, and that was at least ten years ago.
From what I've been able to find out on it, its .44 rimfire, and a large part went to Kentucky and Iowa cavalry units during the War of Northern Aggression.
Low three digit serial number, 886.
Barrel marked 'BALLARD'S PATENT, NOV 5 1861'
'BALL & WILLIAMS, WORCESTER MASS',
then 'MERWEN & BRAYS AGT'S NEW YORK'.
Nice balanced little carbine.

Very nice. I've haven't seen one of those not behind glass in a long time. I saw one last summer at the NYS military museum.
