    Oil Blackening

I thought I read an article on this forum on Oil Blackening, but I cannot find it. Does anyone know how to find it or how to do it the proper Britishicon gun maker's way?

    Is this it?

    Redneck oil blackening

I tried the BBQ/linseed oilicon rubdown once on an old magazine. The follower came out nice and jet black, the magazine more of an ugly brown. FWIW, it seems a pretty durable finish though. Ever try to clean your BBQ? That black "finish" is tough stuff

Not sure on the Britishicon method, but you can do a pretty good job heating the part and quenching in used motor oil from a diesel engine.

That's very basically what we used to do. Get the parts to a deep cherry red and quench in an oil bath. I suppose some oils are better than others but old used filthy engine oil was the most common. You'll need to do it a few times - sometimes as many as six times to get a good deep lustre.

In New Zealandicon, one of the blokes taught me another method called 'blanket blacking' where the part was taken to cherry red and wiped over an old wool blanket. Usually screw heads were best treated with this method

But PLEASE.........., keep a fire blanket handy
