    Post Help identifying M1 Carbine?

Can anyone help a newbie identify what kind of M1icon carbine I just bought at an auction. Looks from what I have researched that its a 6 digit Inland serial number Carbine.

Moderator Edit: Images that were posted indirectly from member's Flickr account were being blocked from appearing here. Our internal virus detection program found something in either the file-names, or embedded within the picture itself, which it wasn't happy about. By the way, Flickr is an awful service if you can avoid it.

    p1nacle,

Welcome to our forum. There are a lot of knowledgeable carbine members here.

The posted pictures have a lot of glare. I do see some recognized markings. I don't see a name above the serial number or rivets in the hand guard. Better pictures will be needed to help you out.

I just passed through Carlsbad Thursday and Sunday on a trip to Coronado, nice area.

Cell phone pics? Not easy to see what you got. Bounce from the flash washes out the photos; you need to turn off the flash & use indirect lighting.

In the early 1970's, several gun magazines ran articles on how to sporterize your USGI M1icon carbine; this looks like a product of such a project. Bubba apparently used a grinder to remove the manufacturers name from the receiver, maybe more; he then polished the rest of the metal, & refinished the wood. I can't tell if the finish is blue or plated with nickel. It looks like a scope mount has been inserted in the rear sight slot.

You can't really shoot it without a rear sight. I suggest that you have a gunsmith install one, & do a "technical inspection" to be sure that it is safe & functional.

The way it is stepped behind the rear sight, I am wondering if it has had the mfgr. name ground off. Maybe a 1960s re-weld receiver, highly polished.

Hope you didn't give too much for it. I would want to drive the scope mount out of the rear sight dovetails and install a G.I. adjustable sight (plenty of them available).

I had on like that recently, had a two groove barrel. It was a de-mil barrel that had been re-lined using an '03 barrel...the rest had been highly polished by a civilian company in the 60s for civ sales...It was OK but not my taste. Maker's stamp was removed like this one.

If that was the original serial number it would have been made by Inland BUT the serial number has been restamped on this one and there is no way to know if it's the original number. The stock is from Quality Hardware, the barrel band is a post war replacement and the front sight is a Rock Island Armory replacement.

The pictures aren't good. To me, it appears to be a commercial receiver, but I really can't tell due to the picture quality.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

A picture of the bottom of the receiver, out of the stock may help ID the receiver.
