Can anyone tell me what this is on a No4?

Does anyone know what this slot is that is milled in this No4?
Thanks!

It almost looks like the start of making it into a SKN rifle.

Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

If you zoom in, there is an "SKN" serial number on top of the receiver wall.
Skeleton action it is!

hmm, early Maltby too, I wouldn't be too happy shooting that with a hole milled through the wall, it does look similar to an SKN viewing slot dosen't it....

I think you may be looking at my SKN 'rifle' which I posted to show the similarity in the 'slot'.
I cannot see the top of the action in the OPs picture.

So nothing specific, just maybe someone’s idea at “lightening” the rifle?!
Thanks everyone!

I don't think so. I wouldn't be too quick to be shooting that one until I had a closer look at things. It's not JUST that simple.

It's obviously a pedersen device cut.
In the wrong spot.
Of the wrong size.
On the wrong rifle.

Ok thanks!
It’s for sale and I’ve never seen that before so it definitely caught my attention. There are no other modifications or markings on it so it’s definitely bizarre

Haha I was going to make a crack that maybe it’s a Perderson device for 22 shorts :P

Correct Alan. I was looking at the pic of your rifle; I thought that was the OP's rifle
