I notice that two of the guys in the hole don't have the bayonet mounted and one does. Do you suppose that was a tactic? Keep some mounted in case of a random charge and leave the rest off for accuracy?

Personal preference, some don't think the bayonet is of much use. Others want all they can get. The rifle shoots as accurately for the layman with blade as without. The average rifleman won't notice the difference.

I never could figure it unless you had no more ammo -- if he's close enough to stick, he close enough to shoot, isn't he?

One advantage of using a bayonet in close crowded combat, as opposed to a rifle or hand-gun, was its avoidance of risk in injuring one's fellow soldiers. A bullet fired at close range into an enemy could well pass through his body and enter a friend standing (or fighting) behind him.

Mark is of course correct but what I found was, if your weapon was going to pack up it would be at the most inopportune time. Like when a guy appears at "0" range. As you can see by the terrain at hand a man could appear real close real quick...that's why we call it CLOSE combat.

And that was the genesis of the question: Did they find by practical experience that they needed someone in each hole who was prepared to "repel boarders"?

I wasn't there. Through my experience it's personal preference.
