I am guessing you had a typo and was asking about a 1903-A3. Anyway, you do not have to remove the front sight. Just take the screw out of the front band, loosen the stacking swivel screw and the lower band screw, and slide both these forward. Then you can remove the barrel and receiver from the stock. Do not remove the screws from the lower band and stacking swivel as they are staked, and many times you will ruin the threads in the bands.

Johnny Peppers, are you saying that the front barrel band can't be slipped over the front sight?

I don't think it can get past the stacking swivel and front band to do so.

The front band (w/bayonet lug) will not go over the front sight.

Hmmmm. Well, this little oversight on my part derails plans to put my 03 sporter into a military stock. Not really interested in taking the barrel off to do that. My fault, entirely, but I wish I had known that before I bought the stock and spent a fair amount of time fitting the rifle to it. At least I haven't bought metal and a sling, yet.

You don't take the barrel off the reciever , you remove the front sight blade from the post ( I THINK it will all fit over the post , if not you'll have to remove the post as an assembly ) . Either way , it's no big deal . Remove pin , drift out or off , install parts , reseat and reinstall pin.
So simple a caveman like me's done it.

There's a small screw on the front of the front sight. Remove this screw to remove the front sight from the dovetail. This allows you to slip of the front band.
