Mauser G98 20 Rd “Sturmtruppen” Trench Magazine

Does anyone have any information on the Mauser G98 20 Rd “Sturmtruppen” Trench Magazine. Does anyone know where I could find detailed pictures of the magazine itself? Is it possible to mount the magazine to a K98icon? If so what kind of alterations or modifications would I have to make to the gun to get it to work?

Sarco had a run of them done up about 20 years ago and they sold for around $40.00. They are copies with all the markings and look "REAL pretty" but are repro's. Too soft to hold the follower in and they will pop on you if you use them in a G98.

Consider this. I've NEVER seen a documentable original. NEVER.

I have seen TONS of the Sarco repros.

There's no doubt real ones existed, but I have NEVER seen a photo of one in action. I've never seen proof that they ever left "prototype" stage in Imperial Germanyicon.

Law shows one in BBOTW, but then BBOTW is known for a few errors - this is often cited as one of them.

Everything I have heard is the few that went into trials in WW1 proved only useful in fortress-mounted guns and the like and that the mag was too heavy, flimsy and awkward for trench fighting. Hence you never see battlefield dug 20 round mags and you NEVER see pics of Fritz using one.

Thanks for all the information guys. I'm new to the forum but have great afinity for milsurp rifles from the first and second World War. You guys reall yknow what you're talking about. I do have question though. By pop you mean the follower will break, welds will break? Breakages could be concequence of poor heat treating (easily fixed). I thought a saw an orginal on gunbroker for like 250$ but it could have just as easily been one of the SARCO copies with a extremely inflated price or passed off as an orginal. Some purists on the site might think that fitting the 20 round magazine to a perfectly good K98icon is pointless and it would be valid argument but it seemed like a neat oddity or obscurity. I was also interested in its operation and just wanted to check it out for myslef.

    Thanks

By pop, he means the mag feed lips will bend and the follower will therefore "pop" up into the bolt channel, jamming the gun.

If you were to fit a "Sturmtruppen" magazine (Sturmtruppen actually used Kar98az carbines, not Gew98 with trench mags) to a rifle, it would look silly on a K98kicon. Originalyl they were made for the WW1 era Gewehr 98 infantry long rifle.

Orinally I thought the magazine was a WWII era design and was fitted to a K98icon sniper rifle. For some reason I thought it was designed to give a sniper more capacity but I can't remember where I heard that story; I can't even remember if I heard that story. This may have been an invention of my overactive imagination. But according to information I received from the very helpful and knowledgable people on this forum I found out it was a WWI design. It makes sense that it would fitted to the long action mauser it being of general issue at the time. Thanks for the information.
