Well, I did what I told myself and all my friends what I would never ever do today. I purchased an AK47, specifically the Romanian version. Cost me a whopping $12.51 with my background check, fee and taxes included. Price seemed right.

The full story is it was at Cabelas and anyone who'se known me long here knows I tend to amass a lot of points there. Tag price was $349 which I felt to be pretty good on it's own. I had a fellow there that actually knew something about them to go over it for me and he passed it with flying colors. Not sure why they priced it the way they did but I'm not complaining. They had three others all in the $550 range. This just came in yesterday, it wasn't cleaned, the barrel had a lot of crap (powder residue) in it. First thing I did was run a patch through it and then did the usual flipping out that there was a hole in the barrel that took me all of 5 seconds to realize was the gas port. Bore looks pristine. I already had the bayonet for this one but it came with a TAPCO magazine that while I don't want to replace it, I would like to get a Romanian magazine just to have. It's also missing it's cleaning rod and cleaning kit in the butt stock. I also need a proper sling for it. I did manage to locate a cleaning rod but need some help in determining what is the correct military sling for this and where I might find a proper magazine for it.

Or perhaps I'm barking up a tree here as this is an import/export model and may not have anything particular that fit it.

Sounds awesome, the world famous AK47 but this is obviously a select-fire version (is that correct terminology for semi-auto?) cuz you just can't buy a machine gun without that special license, right?

Yes, it's the select fire version.

Nothing to do with the anti's poster gun but I did get a chuckle out of that. If anything, that's encouragement to buy one.

I just never had much interest in them. I like my rifles to be accurate to great distances although I probably rarely fire them that far. Not slamming the AK, it is what it is and that's a short to medium range battle rifle. I watch the Military history channel almost non-stop in the evenings and between that and my expanding interest in military firearms, I decided today, after I carried this around in Cabelas for an hour that my collection wouldn't be complete without an example of perhaps the most famous military firearm in existence. Admittedly, the selling point was it wasn't really costing me anything and I've gotten sick of driving up to Cabelas every two weeks to try to get rid of those points on something. And then there were the three different guys that were hovering around the military rifles swearing up and down to their buddies that there really was an AK there for $349. (That's why I was carrying it around) Had I set it back down I don't think it would have been there long.

After cleaning it up a bit, I'm getting attached to it pretty quickly. It's amazing that something so small can be the cause of so much trouble all these years.

My rifle is now fully equipped with a proper type sling which may or may not be Romanian, a Romanian cleaning rod and a Polish cleaning kit which fits in the butt stock. Having had it for about a month now, I can't believe I scorned these rifles all this time. These things just seem to "fit". I had the bayonet for some time, paid more for it than the rifle.

Very nice rifle. I recently put Romanian wood furniture(laminated) on mine with the foregrip, it came with the tapco stock. I'm pretty sure the leather sling is correct.
On a side note, correct me if I'm wrong, I believe "select fire" refers to being able to switch between, full auto or burst to semi. Don't quote me on this either but I read one version of the "ak-74",romanian type had 4 selector positions,top to bottom

Not select fire. As in select between multiple rounds per trigger pull and one round per pull. A select fire AK that's civilian transferrable in the US would be much more expensive and involve lots of waiting before taking possession. (~US$10,000-20,000 and six to nine months wait. Pre-madness figures at any rate.)

I've never seen a transferable AK, they had to be made sometime in the 80's correct....'86-87? Then again I've never looked for one either. I'm in MI and I'm pretty sure without an FFL there is no chance of having a full auto period. Not sure if C&R can or not, dont have that kind of cash so I never bothered to check.

If you have the money you can have full auto. I did work for a fellow that had all sorts of MG's including a 50 cal Browning, M60 and Thompson. You can also have silencers, they are a bit less expensive to own. Each silencer requires it's own license fee. I thought about getting one but they run somewhere around $300 for the license and a couple hundred for the silencer and that isn't worth it to me.

For clarification, the WASR-10 is a semi-auto only. I knew what the fellow who asked me meant by his question and didn't pay attention to the terminology he used.

Up until '86 in the US you could have legally converted a semi-auto rifle to a transferrable select fire "NFA weapon" by jumping through the appropriate hoops. That's how a friend did his M14, by converting a Springfield, Inc. M1A. But most legal AKs at the time were Vietnam bringbacks, it seems. Including some reactivated papered "dewats".
