L4 marking question
Hi all,
Another obscure L4 question here. Apart from the "7.62mm" marking engraved on the rear of the receiver with the NSN/Part Number, was "7.62" marked anywhere else on the receiver? In particular was it ever engraved on the magazine well inserts? I've seen photos which seem to indicate that "7.62" was painted on the receiver forward of the inserts, but I presume this was discontinued at some point as the .303 was withdrawn from service, correct?
Cheers!

It wasn't engraved on the mag well inserts BUT, up until May 1973 (somene correct me if I'm wrong) there was always a red obling, about 1.5" x .75" or so painted at the front of each side of the body, just above the ledge and under the mag well. This had stencilled on it in black '7.62m/m'. As the last of the old Brens had left service, apart from a few Cadet Force ones, the practice had declined in any case so the order was just tidying up the paperwork.
You can guess where they took this idea from can't you............ ? Yep the Inglis 7.92's

Thanks, Peter! That's what I was thinking, but I know better than to trust my memory!
