Regimental Cartouche?
If anyone is familiar with regimental cartouches, perhaps you can help me. There is a 3/4" diameter circle embossed on the buttstock of my early BSA Shirley (s/n A11XX) with a broad arrow in the center (maybe that should be centre given what I'm speaking of) with 512 above the arrow and 275 below it. Any thoughts?

Isn't that one type of Indian inspection mark?

Specifics are unknown, but it is an Indian mark----I've seen it on Ishapore rifles and the painted P14s that came out of there.

Thanks, that explains the DREADED ISHAPORE SCREW!! What was that old fable, Hansel and Grettel, in which they left bread crumbs to find their way back. I have found this old BSA's way back.

Terry,
according to Bob Edwards who wrote India's Enfields, the mark you describe is a "stores mark" with the bottom number of 275 signifying February 1975
