Unknown Marking
I recently purchased a 1911. It has a Ithaca Slide and a Colt frame.
Where the serial number should be is labeled LCSD 1XX.
Does anyone have an idea what LCSD stands for or has anyone seen one like this?

Obviously not the original serial number, which could be a BIG problem. Unless it has been re-numberd by some Law Enforcement Agency, and can be proven as such, it is ILLEGAL to own an altered serial number gun.

I'd bet $5 it's a sheriff's department like Lincoln County Sheriff's Dept., North Carolina. LCSD.
Give them a call and ask them if they ever did this to a handgun. If they did one.. they did more than one.
Check a county map of North Carolina and see if there are any other L-counties.
I wouldn't be real concerned about it not being the original number. Things aren't always so black & white on such matters. It now has a distinctive serial number. At the least it fulfills lawful requirement, possibly in a roundabout way.

Unless ATF knows about it, its "verboten". Even Pre-'68 stuff.
"Make" your own frame and S/N however you like- no problem
Pre-'68 pistol that never had a S/N - no problem
As above, but w/ S/N added- no problem ("lunch box" 1911s fall into these catagories)
S/N defaced/removed- problem!
S/N defaced but reapplied- problem!
S/N defaced but new S/N added-problem!
S/N defaced but new S/N added after ATF approval- no problem-if you have the letter...
