I would not even have picked it up to examine it. Almost did the same thing with a Winchester till I saw that area ground off---I ran away.

First off welcome to the Carbine forum. There is much to learn about the carbine and many people here who can assist you. As well as going back and looking at older threads on related subjects. One way is looking through the sticky section, another is using the search feature. Honest, and sometimes brutally, you can find out what you have. With the knowledge many here already knew missing that number raised a red flag. So again, welcome.
Pictures are always a big help. If you are not sure how, there is a tutorial up in the sticky section walking you through the steps to post them.
My question? Is your carbine four digit 7,40X or seven digit 7,40X,XXX. If the later it seems someone may have ground off the number to be able to sell it.

Just a note of thanks to all the dedicated MilSurps experts and collectors that contribute daily to this Forum. It has expanded my knowledge immensely, saved me from making innumerable Bubba and Bignorant mistakes, and opened my eyes to a deeper understanding of technology, gunsmithing, history, and patterns of evolution. Every day I am amazed how much more there is to learn.
In a nutshell, I've learned not to buy any C&R gun for my collection until having read and researched the MilSurps Forum for a good while.

I suggest going back to the person you purchased it from. Voicing your concerns and asking about the option to return it for a refund. If you have a receipt and get an unsatisfying response, there are other courses of action.
