Need help IDing Large Leather Case

Have had this for some time and have no idea what it was used for, or what it held. Case is right at 3 feet in length, leather outer shell/wood inner structure, is british military and is pre WWII. That's all I know. Would really appreciate any input on this. Thanks!

I'm wondering if it might have been a transport case for a signalling device of the type shown above.

Instrument carrying case seems logical, however, there doesn't appear to be any kind of provision for a carrying strap, and rather heavy construction. The heavy construction and hand strap on top suggests what I think is usually referred to as a "Pass Box", used to carry powder bags for shipboard cannons that use seperately loaded powder and shell, rather than fixed ammunition.

I would think the taper would rule it out as a "pass box".

The N on the side of the case indicates Naval usage.
