Chassebott sword/bayonet
I am in possession of a French edged weapon that my Dad passed down to me.
It is engraved on the blade with an officers name and the date 1879
I have been told it is a Chassbott [sic] but unsure. Any help would be appreciated.

It is not the officers name it is th earsenal name that made the blade, and the 9 is actually a 4 they stopped making the Chassepot in 1874 when the Gras came out. Goto BAyonet Collection Presentation and go to the dedicated page on the 1866 chassepot for details and comparison pieces
