Exceptional springfield photo
I usually post the garand picture of the day but this is worth is passing on here
U.S. Naval Reserve Aviation Base, New York, N.Y.
(Floyd Bennett Field)
Scene in the base Armory, circa 1940-1942.
A Sailor is working on a Browning .30 caliber machine gun at the bench in the foreground.
Note the two-tiered rack at right, holding 40 M1903 ("Springfield") rifles, and the unit in the left center distance, with many of its pigeon-holes containing web cartridge belts for rifle ammunition.

Nice pic. That rack is actually holding 79 rifles, not 40.

My Dad was career Navy with most of it in aviation. He was stationed at Floyd Bennett Field part of 1942 and flew antisubmarine patrols in Kingfisher (OS2U) and PBY's (I think, I'm still researching). He would tell me about going to the range to keep their marksmanship up using '03's, .30 and .50 cal. machineguns. Who knows, he might have handled one of the weapons in the picture.
Cheers, Don
