Shooting The 71/84 Mauser

I am taking this one out today to fire off the last of the smokeless "equivalent" ammunition that I got with the rifle.
It is hard to credit equivalency when the rifle recoils like a .22 and sounds like a Benjamin pellet gun.
It doesn't like these loads, either. I get wildly variable results.

If you have decent 777 loads you would like to share, or even straight-up BP, whip them out please.



It's a Jaeger rifle, so the unmatching triggerguard swivel has been removed.

Mine has been cut back and put back to a single shot. Pristine bore and slugs at .452. I use 230 grain .45 acp bullets and 14 grains of Trail boss for easy clean up. Chronographs just over 1080 fps. I killed a doe this past fall at 65 yds with it. Pleasant to shoot. It was given tome by a dear friend and draws grins from any one who fires it. No need to size, just punch out/replace the primer, seat the bullet by hand run it up slightly in a .45 acp sizer die to provide a bit of neck tension. One of my cherished rifles.

Bought one on the Cast Boolits site to shoot in CBA Military matches. 21 grains XMP-5744, 340 grain Lyman #446110 WW+Pb @ 8 BHN, WLR primer, and requires Dacron wad for good ignition. Made brass out of .45-90 WCF. Recently set a new CBA Big Bore 40 round standing record with it. And as soon as I figure out how to get the picture inserted, I'll update post.

I bought a 71/84 that was sporterized and have shot it for years but due to some physical problems I've had to try to reduce the recoil. I modify 45-90 brass to use in the rifle since commercial brass for the 71/84 is so expensive and I have a really good friend that has sent me a pile of 250gr 45LC cast bullets that I resize to .446" to work in the rifle. I shoot with 25gr of 5744 powder that has worked really well and has been very accurate. The picture below is my rifle.


This is the modified 45-90 brass with the resized 250gr bullet set to just touch the rifling.


I loved shooting this rifle but due to problems had to stop due to the recoil causing neck and shoulder problems but a good friend came up with the idea of using a lighter bullet and lighter powder charge and it worked perfect and it is also very accurate.
