History of S&W pistol found.
As a young man in the US Navy I was sent to a shooting range to learn how to use the 1911A. Was able to shoot it accurately for maybe 1 mag due to the heavy recoil causing me to flinch. Later I happened on what turned out to be a 1917 S&W in .45. I bought it for 20$, shot it a little with much better result. I still have it and shoots beautifly some 60 years later.
Took it to a recent gun show in Bradenton Fl where I luckily found a fellow my age knew all about it. Turns out its chambered in .455 Webley and was part of a contract S&W had with England to supply this firearm. It was returned to the US after the war and S&W contrived to use a half moon clip to accomodate the 45 ACP. There is a crown stamp on the frame as the clue. Gentleman says its now scarce and is worth some money. S&W now supplies a full moon clip for it.

Welcome to the forum. Those pistols were common back then but not so much now. The cylinder has been turned down to accommodate the clip so it's been altered from it's original form. They were changed so the US shooters could enjoy them. Love to see some pics of it.
