I'd say generator to run the radio equipment. Probably loud hence the distance between the two.

That makes sense because the radio jeep is not an MZ (dedicated radio jeep). The radio in an MZ runs solely off the jeep.

I could be wrong, but I suspect that a closer look will reveal that the 'Marine Corps covers' are actually WWII US Army issue hats, i.e. 'Ranger caps'.
I'm still leaning towards this picture being of a CBI Theatre operation into Burma.
