P14 parts iterchange with the M1917?
In previous post I stated that I bought a eddystone 1917, Mixmaster. Went to a pawn shop today and looked at a British p14 in 303. After reading farris's book about the interchangability issues between the big three's p14's compared to thier efforts to interchange the m1917's. I took a close look at this P14. first it was a drill rifle with a 3/8 hole drilled through the barrel in front of the reciever. a rod had been run through it and welded on both ends. otherwise it was very intact but a little rough. asking price was 150 bucks. It was a mixmaster too. I walked away cause it seemed like a dawg with flea's. Another concern was that the vendor tried to convince me all I had to do was rebarrel it for .30'06 and it would be a great shooter.
Not.
anyway.. my question is...Do parts on p14's interchange with m1917's and when you buy parts to resto your m1917 how do you know what your getting?

The parts are to some extent interchangable. They are also probably marked for the country of origin and therefore would never pass as anything but what they originally were. The bolt and mag follower and barrel are of course unique. The feed lips are built in to the receiver and are again different. Your vendor is just a vendor, not a gunsmith.

Thanks Jim. "To some extent"? Let me rephrase the question. will parts from a P14 interchange with m1917 parts on m1917 rifles to the same extent that m1917 parts interchange between Remington,Winchester and Eddystone m1917 parts interchange. I might reemphesise that I am restoring a Eddystone M1917 and intend to shoot it. Another collector pointed out that it is a moot point because M1917 parts have the eaglehead inspectors stamps on them which separates and distiguishes them from the English P14 parts and since its a resto it will have to have the correct inspector stamp on each part to make it a correct level restoration...Moot point. There country of origin would be the US according to Farris as these rifles were made in the US.
Your point that vendors are not gunsmiths is well taken. My hope was that others would see the humor in his hard sell misinformation. I avoided refering to him as a gunsmith because he was a vendor and not a gun smith. I'm not a gunsmith nor a vendor but I knew better than that. I have Ferris's book and one whole chapter is dedicated to the 303 to .30'06 conversion issue and several sections in other chapters as well.

Mike16,
Your question has been discussed before. Type the following in the search box.....No. 3 Mk 1 and M1917 difference

You could probably change wood and sights and some of the small non specific parts back and forth but the markings will make it a worse mixmaster than ever. There are enough M1917's around to get the correct parts to rebuild. The main difference is they are different calibers so the receiver and bolt and barrel are different. The rest may just go together with only minor fitting issues.

Did a search. Read ferris's book, never mind.
