I would be interested also in what that scabbard is. I let one go at a local auction as I had never seen one. Live and learn. Hammer price of $75.00!

You are right. After I posted this, a friend who is quite knowledgeable on Krags confirmed what you have stated.

Correct--M1912 picket pin scabbard. The o-ring was used to attach it to the saddle. Apparently a surplus dealer paired off a bunch of Kragicon bayonets with these picket scabbards a long time ago and you still find them together quite often. Here is what the Krag bayonet scabbards look like:

These combinations come up regularly, and more so recently, it took me a long time to pick up one and then the flood gates opened (I have an example on my site with the original Picket pin to show what should have been in the scabbard). these were put together by Bannerman and sold as Cavalry Carbine bayonets, however the cavalry carbine has no provision for a bayonet so that is very unlikely. What tis interesting is that UKicon P1888's keep turning up in Kragicon scabbards so the scabbards are out there.

This pairing makes an interesting addition to a collection if only to show it ain't right

Yes, that is a M1912 picket pin scabbard. The system also came with an entrenching tool head that slipped onto the picket pin to make a shovel for the trooper.

I inherited several of my grandfather's items that he had gathered from his stay in the Philippines in 1901. One was a Kragicon bayonet. He was in C Troop, 1st Cavalry Regiment. They had no issue knife so I'm sure that a Krag bayonet was a welcome addition---beg, borrow or steal. I am also sure that he didn't carry it in a M1912 Picket pin scabbard!

Also from reenacting with the Krag bayonets I know how easily these are lost in the field. If the mechanism comes unlatched it is bound to fall from the belt. A much smarter system would have been for it to latch at the bottom, then if it came undone it would at least still have been "hooked" around the belt.
