If the chest is matching to the rifle, sometimes there will be unit markings present. Other than that, it's virtually impossible.

You should post pictures of the chest, because Peter Laidler can look up the number to identify the Unit.

On a separate subject, I am intrigued by the tiny flaming grenade stamp visible just under the last digit of your rifle's serial no. (2nd picture). I wonder what that's from?

Looks more like a "3" to me, as if the serial number has been over-struck - there seems to be several numerals underneath the visible serial.

Now that I look again, I think it's a remnant of the original serial number stamps that were linished and renumbered during the L42 conversion process. It looks a bit smaller than the later stamps.
