    S42 vbb

I just picked up a nice, all matching kar98k, 1936 dated S42 manufacture at the local gunshop. The only issues are that at some point someone put a light coat of varnish on it, which is wearing off in a lot of places, and for some reason the Heer marks aren't visible on the stock flat. It's quite worn there, but can't tell if sanded or not. The serial number is there on the underside and the wood-metal fit is good with no "proud" metal so no evidence of extensive sanding. I like these early 98s. They were so anal in their markings-- even the screws are serial numbered. I had almost given up hope of finding something like this at a reasonable price. The original non RC are so hard to find now, are often suspect, and usually ridiculously priced. Maybe I'm just showing my age, but I remember when a nice WWII Mauser was about 350. Now, even the mixmaster RC stuff is 650.

One tends to trade time and fuel for good deals.

    So may we expect photos?

Yes, but not for a week or so. I'm very willing to trade time and fuel for good deals, and have done that recently for Rosses and Enfields. Just haven't run into any k98s recently that I would have considered worth it.

    Pictures now here

I love how everything including the screws and front sight are numbered on these pre-war Mausers.

Someone has put the rear barrel band on upside down, so will have to fix that........ The stock flat is either worn or sanded, as the marks are very faint on it, but the serial number on the underside is quite clear, but a bit worn.

Nice rifle! Too bad the stock looks to have been lightly sanded and varnished. It's a rare rifle simply due to wartime attrition rates.

Thanks!. The 1936 date is nice. I'm happy with the rifle, as all matching original k98k's are hard to find, especially pre-war. Given the 77 years since this was made, and what it's probably been through, it's in decent condition!

Wow. I'd love to come across a rifle like that in a local shop. Very nice. Congrats.
