Savage No.4 Mk1* (Freebie)

I still don't know what I did to deserve it, but I was given an almost complete Savage #4 Mk1* this afternoon. It has a 2 groove barrel with a tight muzzle and nice sharp rifling. Externally it's in pretty poor condition with some rust pitting on the barrel under the wood. Also, it's missing it's bolt and the rear screw from the trigger guard , but that's not a real serious problem as Springfield Sporters has all the screws and some complete bolt assemblies fairly reasonable.

Does anyone know how to date the Savage #4's? Serial# is 88C87xx it's marked U.S. Property
