    Scope problem

Hello to all and Great site, I just picked up a very nice Inland sn# 1944 as close as I can tell, with an Inland barrel dated the same. Great price lots of new ammo and 3 US 30 rounders. the problem it its had a scope put on it some time in the 50s Im guessing as its and old Numrich mount that slides into the dove tail on top and then had to be drilled and tapped into the receiver just under the wood on the left side. You can see half the screw head. The Weaver scope is vintage 50s as well. I'm thinking more than one person on here has seen this abomination. The gun is super clean, nice bore and the wood is very nice as well. I will be pulling off this junk this week end and will put on the proper rear site when I figure out just what should be on it as there are many. My question is this thing safe to shoot like this? Some one has been shooting it during the last 50 years or so but with my luck it will blow up on me. any advice as to what way to go with this would be appreciated. I would like to get the gun back to the way it should be but dont want to ruin it any further.

Screw holes can be filled and there's a half dozen threads here already about that. Virtually all weapon threads have some line of question and answer on it. The rear sight is easy too, once you determine which exact one. You can advertise here and one will appear. If you wish to have the holes redone professionally, contact Chuckindenver here for further consultation unless you have someone in mind in your area. I've done my share of things like barrel changes, but filling a screw hole and making all gone is a bit more craftsy and requires things not normally held in the basement. At least he can fill you in on details. Info shared. Your gun won't blow up, have faith.
    Regards, Jim

As to the rear sight it all depends on the serial number. Going by barrel dates is not an accurate gauge of production date. Some are off by three months or maybe even more in some of the early production.

I agree.... be happy with your new toy. 50 years is a long time to give a rifle to blow up. And that's American made by in American with our own materials. made by people that carried about the American that was going to carry it. Highest quality in the world.

    Thanks to all

I was great to get so many replies. I will post some pictures as soon as I can get it broke down. The Idea of a scope on a 30 carbine is not all that bad to me as my eyes are not as good as they used to be but not not on a war era Inland if that is in fact what I have. I am learning that there were a few good post war commercial guns made over the years and some could accommodate a scope with out marring the gun. One my well be in my future at some point but right now I just want to do right by this old girl. Thanks again for the replies and kind words. Pics to follow.

    Inland SN# pics

Pulled of the scope so I could get a good shot of SN#, Also included the best pic I could of the barrel markings. The scope is a Weaver a K4 60-C Made in El paso Tx. It has a small amount of eye bell damage but I'm told that it may be able to be fixed, if so I have a 1950 Marlin 336A DL in 32 win special that needs a scope. Seems like a good match. Any way, here are are 2 pics for your viewing pleasure. Thanks again for every ones time.

Demaggg, I believe your serial number and barrel date are good. Can you post a pic of the rear sight dovetail with the scope out? I'm just curious about the stake marks. Thanks.....Frank
